The addwood project started 2020 its research funded by the FNR Germany. It is developing a material with exclusively natural ingredients based on leftovers from wood processing. Sawdust is mixed with a water-soluble natural binding agent to form a paste for additive manufacturing. The entire process is optimized for the lowest possible energy consumption and the printed objects are dried with a cold air stream. The method is completely circular and the manufactured parts can be shredded and used for new prints. A strength comparable to chipboards combined with a lower density would allow the design of irregular shaped voluminous furniture pieces.
